I'm interested in building a long bow, but where to start?

I would like to build a long bow as a gift for someone. I am a gunsmith that has 32 years experience building rifles. But I have never built a bow of any kind. I would like the finished bow to resemble a Scottish long bow and be 50-55 lbs pull weight. I do not have any plans or know the materials needed. If anyone can give me a bit on advice and point me in the right direction I will be thankful.

Although I primarily shoot compound, I still very much enjoy shooting my traditional bows.
As you noted about wanting to build a longbow, there are some really good and informative you tube videos and traditional websites with a wealth of information on building your own bows.
A couple of sites/forums I would highly recommend looking at for information would be:

    http://www.droptinetraditions.com/php/
    http://www.renegadearchery.com/build...w_building.htm
    http://peteward.com/bow.building.htm
    http://www.kawarthatraditionalarchery.info/whatsnew.htm

Another option I would also consider is getting in contact with your local archery clubs or shops as there are quite a few very talented traditional archers and bowyers who are more then willing to teach or assist someone in the craft of bow making. One of the local and largest traditional shops up here I frequent for my trad supplies has an experienced local bowyer offering a weekend long bow making class once or twice a year.

Glad I could help. Keep us informed with some pics if you can of how your bow making progresses. Seeing hand crafted traditional recurve or long bows are always amazing to look at. You may even encourage a few of us to take a stab at making our own in the very near future.
