    Mid-season Ice Report

So winter showed up in a rush this year and it's looking like it will continue to hold steady right through to mid-March.

How it started... I was driving down the road and looked over at a series of ponds close to my house. Saw a couple guys on the ice with rods. Second weekend of December... sure why not? I had my gear loaded in the back of my ride ready to fish from the first deep freeze so I pulled over and hiked out to see what was happening. These guys got a hacthetwith some 7'5 walleye rods fishing for pan fish through 6 inches of ice. Hmmm... well at the start of the season I pack light. Just a deep sided sled with a bucket, hand auger, a few rods and my small tackle kit. Decided to drill a few holes and hooked into some bluegills. Game on.

Next weekend decided to head to a good early ice pike spot that hasn't failed me before. Had my buddy go there the night before to check the ice and once we knew it was safe... decided to bring the kids out with us. Got out there by 7:30am setup the huts, punched some holes and started fishing. All the kids really wanted to do was play in the snow... I was there to catch pike. Mission accomplished:

The next weekend it was time to hit some perch. Local small ponds with no rivers feeding into them will still good and thick after the mid-dec thaw. I had sold my vexilar FL8-se and decided to buy their new Sonarphone T-Pod. It's basically a float bobber that creates a wifi signal and allows any smartphone or tablet within 150 feet to connect into the full color fishfinder. It's a pretty awesome little gadget and I'll be able to troll it with a canoe this summer too. Took my 6 year old son out to a local pond... good 35' of water and it is chock full of 10"+ perch and some monster bass. Drilled a couple holes found the edge of a weedbed and it was almost too easy. For a 6 year old he has some serious technique.

Fast forward another week... off to Lake St. Clair. Met up with a buddy and hitched a skidoo ride out to the perch grounds. Nothing too spectacular but i wasn't at work so even just being on the ice was better than sitting at a desk:

Last weekend got invited to an ice fishing derby at a local members only private pond. Really nice place; stocked a few times a year with trout and it has good sized bass. Got there with Owen at 7:15 to register... headed out on the ice and drilled 6 holes in a rectangle about 15' apart in a grid. One side was 13' deep the other side was 22'... Owen scoops the holes while i check for fish with the sonarphone. Marked the best four holes and setup a rod on each. Simple rig with a tiny jigging rapala at the bottom then a small brightly colored Gamatsku steelhead hook drop shot rigged above it. On two rods we put powerbait putty balls and on two of them I use live mealworms. Nature vs. Playdough. Because I was the only one with a power auger i got asked to drill a bunch of holes for other people...didn't bother me because their spooked fish my head towards our holes. 10 minutes later Owen hooks something but loses it mid-fight. Put a fresh mealworm on and right after dropping it; he lands a nice little 10" rainbow trout. The rules for the derby is no releasing fishing... total length of up to three fish. The boy is amped now but things quiet down a bit and people start to wander and get frustrated the the wind picks up and it turns into an endurance match. i decide to ditch the power bait and use mealworms on on 4 rods. Standing there talking and one of the rods start bobbing like crazy... I yell to Owen to grab it and he's got a beast but loses it before it gets to the hole... same technique - fresh worm drop it down and BAM. He's got a good size rainbow hooked and knows it... he fought it right to the snow and there were 8 guys and a handful of kids standing there watching him. Now he's the talk of the pond... this kid hammering trout.

Well after all was said and done. Final measurements and he actually WON the whole derby. Some of those guys on the ice had fished that pond for 20+ years. When I showed him where his name will go on the wall plaque inside he says to me: "Does this mean I'm a legend?" "Sure does buddy, sure does"

I love fishing and for me the whole experience from planning the trip, figuring out your program and ultimately catching a trophy fish is exciting... but it pales in comparison to watching your your own son (or daughter) get ridiculously excited about landing a fish. It's the best. It's that simple.

Well I'll be back out this wekend hunting for walleye through the ice at Fanshawe. Also have a trip booked to Barrie (Minets Pt) in February to go for lakers and whitefish. Maybe a weekend at Sarnia bay then it's off to the Dominican for some deep sea fishing and maybe some fly fishing depending on the weather.

That is an awesome report Bobby! That video is great. Nothing better than sharing with your kids.

What a great rainbow. What was the final measurements? Congratulate him for me will you. That is spectacular.

I would like to know more about this thing,
Sonarphone T-Pod. It's basically a float bobber that creates a wifi signal and allows any smartphone or tablet within 150 feet to connect into the full color fishfinder.
I can't wait to read these reports
