    2012 Bass Season

With one week from Bass season opening what is everyone's plans? Where will you be fishing opening day? What will you be using?

I can not wait and am very excited. I will be on the Ottawa River in my favorite Small Mouth Bass hole using my wacky rig with a 4" black sinker Senko worm and red Gamakatsu EWG hook. 2012 Bass Season-wacky-rig-jpg
I will be using a light action rod, braided line with a fluorocarbon leader. This set up is very effective and lethal.

Never really understood the fluorocarbon leader. Must just be because of the jig i use, my goal this year is to find a nice bass lake and land me some. I have one lake but its a good 45minutes down the gravel road. Don't really want to bring my new to me fiberglass boat there.

    Bass season
Like a kid waiting for Christmas morning I anticipate the arrival of opening day.
I will be heading to some favorite spots on both the Grand river and the Nith river.
I will be in the river as the sun is rising, taking advantage of the Smallmouths habit of top water feeding using some of my favorite top water baits.

Heddon Torpedoes are my 'go to' bait, they have never failed me. I can say the same for the
Rebel Pop-R and Rapala Skitter Pop.
I will even put on a old Jitterbug occasionally in the right conditions.
There is nothing like having a big Bass break the water's surface to grab your lure, often leaping a foot or more.

As the morning wears on I will switch to spinners and crank baits.
classic Mepps spinners will bring me luck, #2 and #3 work best in the river.
I started using Blue Fox Vibrax spinners a couple of years ago with great success.
Initially purchased for Trout fishing, the Bass love them.
The Cotton Cordell Big O crank bait is a Bass killer and will be in my tackle bag.

As for the rod and reel I will use my 5' UL St.Croix Premier rod and
Phluger President spinning reel with Stren Big Game 4 lb test.

(The Phluger President has 9 + 1 bearing system and 5:2:1 gear ratio
It is one of the smoothest spinning reels I have ever owned.
    The St.Croix rod is...well...its a St.Croix, nuff said.)

Smallmouth is my favorite fish to eat, I can almost taste it now.
Good luck gentlemen, I hope everyone has a great day.
    Don't forget your camera!

Here is a couple of pics of what is in my bag for Saturday morning.

    Here is what I tell everyone who asks me the same thing;
A flurocarbon leader gives you two distinct advantages, especially when using braided line.

    1. It is invisilbe in the water. Braided is not.
    2. It is abrasion resistant. Braided again is not and very susceptible to abrasion on rocks and bottom when jigging.

What a great morning for smallmouth!! I had a blast with my son Drew who is 4. He caught his first fish on his own and reeled it into the boat by himself as well. He caught two more after that.
Check out the pictures here. http://www.archerandangler.com/forum....php?albumid=8

I was in the river by 5:45 yesterday morning, Very picturesque, mist coming off the water...beauty day.
Fish were surfacing everywhere and I tossed every topwater bait I own at em without a single hit.
Switched to a Cotton Cordell Big O crayfish crank and the action started.
Caught over 20 Smallmouth but only 3 worthy of the frypan, most of the fish were only 6 to 11 oz, not even bearing the markings of a smallie yet.

When I got home I threw the stringer with3 smallies on the ground and the dogs came to check them out.
Cleo, our oldest dog began to attempt to bury the fish , she had obviously claimed the fish as her own. see video clip

Once I had the fish in a bucket of water she didn't want anyone touching 'Her Fish' see pics

One of my life's regrets is that I did not have a Son to take fishing
    Enjoy

    ---------- Post Merged on 06-28-2012 at 12:54 AM ----------

The fish are beginning to get lure wise as the river is flooded with Anglers and Hackers.
I did get a few smallies on Sunday and hade a feast of fillets fried in a Ginger ale batter.
I added Clubhouse Greek seasoning to the batter and it turned out great!

This morning I tied into something big that I suspect may have been a Rainbow.
About 50 yards of line peeled off then it was just gone ??
I did catch one small bass that is in the freezer now waiting for company.
My dog Cleo tried to claim this fish ( she did like the Bass Sunday night for supper)

My wife and I will be out this weekend fishing for our supper
