A Beaver gives a gift

lookee what Mr Beaver left me! I was noticing while turkey hunting that a few ducks had started to hangout in the SW part of the farm in the brushes.. I know the creek drains that way towards the marsh. Last year I busted up a beaver dam for the farmer. Well, when turkey was a bust for the day, I took a stroll to see what the ducks are all happy about. It appears that Mr Beaver has relocated...

Gripping Your Ice-fishing Rod

Ice fishing has come a long way, with anglers becoming more adept at using electronics, finesse baits, and species-specific presentations. Another advancement is a fundamental change in the way anglers hold their ice-fishing spinning rods. Called the underhand hold, this technique provides better balance and comfort and also has advantages for finesse jigging. Try this easy way to improve...

How To Fillet a Northern Pike and Remove Bones

I am often asked how my Northern Pike Fillets have no bones. I am not much of a movie maker so I found a couple of videos that show the same techniques I use to fillet Northern Pike. I have really grown to love my "powered" filleting knife and use it most often. This first video does not have a powered knife but he uses the same techniques I do. In particular leaving a "handle" as indicated at...

Mid-season Ice Report

So winter showed up in a rush this year and it's looking like it will continue to hold steady right through to mid-March. How it started... I was driving down the road and looked over at a series of ponds close to my house. Saw a couple guys on the ice with rods. Second weekend of December... sure why not? I had my gear loaded in the back of my ride ready to fish from the first deep freeze so I...

Colorado GMU004 Elk and Deer

I recently purchased my 2015 Colorado draw tags for GMU004 - both for elk and deer. I burned several preference points to ensure I finally will be hunting both elk and mule deer at the same time. Last time was 5 years ago - and I did get both... but since then nothing so I'm hoping... no praying that the Lord allows me to once again take at least one of these animals. Finally getting at least...

How To Set Up a Baitcasting Reel & Cast...

BASIC SETTINGS On the side of your reel, under the handle and next to the drag adjustment, is a small, round knob. This is the spool-tension control, sometimes called a cast-control knob. It's analogous to the hand brake on your car. I've never seen a baitcaster without one, and this knob is key to your initial success. Most...
